Can Web Content Still Make Money from Ads? AI Traffic Is Wrecking the Traditional Model 💸

Looking at Cloudflare’s recent data, as much as 60% of HTML requests across the web are now sent by AI bots, and real human traffic has dropped to just 38%. The rules of the internet have completely changed!

🔻 The traditional ad model is collapsing: Websites used to give away free content in exchange for traffic, then made money from ads. Now ChatGPT and Claude summarise everything and give the answer straight to the user, so nobody needs to click through to your site any more.

🔻 Paying to feed AI crawlers: AI scrapes data like crazy for RAG, but sends back very little traffic. Take ClaudeBot as an example: it crawls 4,200 pages to send back 1 visitor! If you’ve ever run a server, you’ll understand. Site operators are now effectively eating a huge bandwidth bill, letting AI take data for free while earning no ad revenue.

💡 The way forward: “Pay-per-request” machine-to-machine payments. Since you can no longer earn ad money from “human eyeballs”, the future will likely turn to machine payments. The moment an AI bot comes to a web server or API to fetch data, the system automatically charges a tiny fee. The internet is being forced to move from “free and open” to an era of “pay for data access”.
