The Enemy of My Enemy Is My Friend! OpenAI Cuts Off Cursor, Anthropic Steps In Instantly

Ever since SpaceX acquired the popular AI Code Editor Cursor for $60 billion, OpenAI has announced, on the grounds that it “can’t trust Elon Musk to abide by the contract terms”, that it will officially ban Cursor from 12 November 2026, cutting off all OpenAI models (including GPT-5.6 and the upcoming Astra)!

Rival Anthropic announced within hours that it would step up support and add capacity for Claude (Sonnet 5 and others) on Cursor.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei is himself a former OpenAI executive who left over differences in philosophy, and his feud with Sam Altman goes back a long way.

Although only 5% of Cursor’s traffic uses OpenAI, once the supply is cut, these loyal OpenAI users will move seamlessly over to the Claude camp!
